Owen Farrell’s big move from Saracens to Racing 92 has been confirmed.
The French giants have released publicly for the first time that the 112-cap England fly-half will move to Paris this summer, on a two-year deal.
The 32-year-old will be off-limits for England selection for the duration of his time overseas.
The move will come as a blow to England head coach Steve Borthwick, who had wanted Farrell to continue his Test career.
Farrell stepped down from Test duties after the autumn’s World Cup in France, citing the need to protect his and his family’s mental well-being.
But now England’s record points scorer is set for an extended break from Test duties, and will enjoy two campaigns at Parisian elites Racing.
Farrell has spent his entire club career to date at Saracens, having made his debut for the north Londoners aged 17 – going on to win six Premiership titles and three European Cups.
“Racing 92 formalises the signing of Owen Farrell within its professional men’s team,” read a curt Racing statement.
“The English international player is committed to two sporting seasons and will join the Blue and White squad from July 1, 2024.”
Farrell will join superstars like double World Cup-winning South Africa captain Siya Kolisi in France, and will have the chance at an entirely new life experience.
England do not select overseas-based players however, and there will be no exception to the rule for Farrell.
Saracens will be losing a talisman synonymous with the club’s success story, and his departure will leave a sizeable chasm.
Rugby director Mark McCall has spoken in recent weeks of the end of an era approaching for Saracens this summer, and Farrell’s departure will head a cast of decorated stars to depart.
“When those players go I am going to miss them a lot,” said McCall. “They are friends as well as colleagues.”
