Overwatch updates Anran’s look for Season 2 after backlash over her original model

Overwatch has revealed an updated look for Anran, with the revised model that will go live along with Season 2 on April 14.

The changes were made following the backlash that started soon after the hero’s launch, when players criticized how her in-game face looked compared to earlier promotional appearances and how similar she was to other women on the roster.

Anran is one of the five characters added at the start of Overwatch’s 2026 Season 1, when the devs dropped “2” from its title and decided to bring the game back to being just Overwatch.

She is a Damage hero, Wuyang’s older sister, and uses fire-based abilities, including Zhuque Fans, Inferno Rush, Dancing Blaze, and two versions of her ultimate, depending on whether she is alive or dead.

The new update tries to bring her closer to her promotional materials, where she had a more chiseled face and overall much less mild facial traits. Game Director Aaron Keller said the team changed her eyes, eyebrows, and mouth, and also adjusted her posture.

Keller added that the goal was to move away from a “baby face” look and expression, and give Anran a more sincere and mature appearance that better matches her intended personality, and make her feel more like the “fiery and fierce” sister of Wuyang.

The criticism of Anran’s appearance started in February, shortly after her debut. Players argued that her final in-game model looked too close to heroes like Kiriko and Juno, and it did not match the sharper features seen in earlier material.

Blizzard has been hard at work ever since the game was changed back to Overwatch, and the developers have announced that on April 8, 9am PT, a new hero will be revealed.

We already know how she looks from this big promo image, but no additional info aside from this is known yet.
