The Overwatch collab with Nier dropped yesterday, March 10, bringing a range of skins based on the prolific action RPG to the hero shooter. Sadly, winning matches as 2B and 9S isn't enough to assuage many players who're feeling a bit shortchanged by the pack.
There are five costumes in total: A2 for Vendetta; 2B for Kiriko; 9S for Wuyang; Commander White for Mercy; and Adam for Lifeweaver. These all come with distinct emotes and victory poses, as you'd expect. What they don't offer are victory poses or their own voice lines, leading to some disappointment.
"Blizzard knows the bundle will sell sure, but they could at least put some more effort in to make the collaboration seem… you know, interesting? Really a disappointing bundle," says one player on the Blizzard forums. "None of the skins have any VFX or SFX unique to them, not a single voice line and not even one highlight intro," a fan on Reddit states.
A player on Reddit rightly points out that "Hello Kitty got more than these folks," when that arrived last month. Each partnership is different, but it doesn't come across well that another beloved game doesn't have bespoke dialog for the FPS, while a merchandising brand does.
The price – 6900 Overwatch coins, the equivalent of $69.99 – is another issue. "The fact that this skin bundle costs more THAN THE ACTUAL FUCKING GAME is insane," states another Redditor.
"At least we can rest assured the game will be funded for the next year," a commenter wryly points out. Sure enough, Nier: Automata being as popular as it is, sales aren't in question. This is a game that has its own live music tour, has inspired numerous other collabs, and is responsible for enough merchandise to stock an entire chain of stores.
"I've seen enough 2Bs and 3As or whatever tonight to convince me this collab was entirely successful, from a business standpoint," as another player points out. Capitalism, eh? The Overwatch x Project YoRHa crossover comes with a selection of challenges for extra rewards, and it runs until March 23.
