The Overground and District Tube line will be closed for four weekends in September and October, Network Rail has confirmed, to allow for repairs to Kew Railway Bridge.
Both lines will be closed between Kew Gardens and Gunnersbury stations to allow for essential maintenance to the bridge in south west London.
Work will take place September 7-8; 14-15; 28-29 and then October 5-6 meaning the four weekends are not successive.
It will disrupt the Richmond to Stratford Overground line as well as the District line and a rail replacement bus service has been set up to cover.
Network Rail has said it needs to replace more than 570 wheel timbers that are 25 years old and in poor condition.
These timbers hold the rails in place and the old ones will be replaced with a more durable material that lasts longer.
Simon Milburn, Network Rail’s Anglia infrastructure director, said: "This is a vital job that will help to keep this wonderful heritage structure operating as a key part of these busy railway lines.
“We will also use this closure to carry out other maintenance work to help deliver a reliable service for our customers.
"We need to replace the deteriorating wheel timbers on Kew Railway Bridge so that we can continue to run trains over the River Thames safely and reliably in future.”
