MUMBAI: Just a few months ago, battling labour trouble, the Royal Calcutta Turf Club (RCTC) was on the verge of shutting down and many in the Indian racing had already started writing obituaries. The RCTC management, though, wasn’t ready to call it quits. They stayed firm in the face of unreasonable demands and finally succeeded in overcoming the odds. Today, RCTC is ready to organise Invitation Weekend, the biggest weekend in Indian racing, on March 2 and 3.
The situation was so bad that RCTC had even alerted the Turf Authorities of India, the umbrella organization of the six turf clubs in the country, that it may not be able to hold the 2024 Invitation Weekend. However, the RCTC officials were not ready to give up and they then left no stone unturned and made a grand resurgence. “All those coming to RCTC this weekend will witness the best of hospitality apart from top class racing action,” said Enrico Piperno, chairman of racing operations, RCTC.
