Over 40 turtles were rescued from a dying Pennsylvania lake in 2025; now, after a massive cleanup, they’re finally returning to the water they once called home

After an extensive restoration effort which turned a polluted water body into one that would support life, 49 musk turtles have been reintroduced into Crystal Lake in Pennsylvania where the animals were previously living. They had been taken out while the water body was being dredged in 2025 after years of being affected by sediment building and water-quality problems.

Crystal Lake, situated in Carsonia Park close to Reading, was highly affected by sediment build-up by the time of the restoration project. As per the Aark Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center, the amount of build-up had made parts of the lake “about three feet deep deep instead of its natural 10ft,” resulting in algae problems and oxygen depletion. There were also water quality and aquatic habitat improvement as goals in the restoration efforts.
