Over 100 riot police guard England hotel after hostile reception in Mexico

  • Over 100 riot police in bullet-proof vests are guarding the hotel where the England football team is staying in Mexico , following a hostile reception upon their arrival for their World Cup knockout match against Mexico.
  • England had attempted to keep their location secret after Mexico supporters used loud speakers, horns, and motorcycles to disturb Ecuador's players before their previous match, but hundreds of fans were already present at the hotel, booing and chanting 'Mexico'.
  • Security measures at the hotel include a fence, officers from the Guardia Nacional, a police dog, and a drone, with around 200 locals gathered nearby on Saturday.
  • England captain Harry Kane expressed hope that his team's performance would provide an antidote to Monday morning blues, with pubs in the UK staying open late for fans to watch the match, which kicks off at 1am UK time.
  • The match in Mexico City is set to proceed at its planned time despite earlier discussions about bringing the game forward due to potential storm forecasts, with Fifa confirming no rescheduling decision was ever made.
