The tragic death of Nicola Bulley finally was confirmed on Monday after a body was found in the police search for the mum of two. There has been much speculation during the search and the debate was taken up during Monday's edition of ITV Loose Women. Known for her forthright views, broadcaster and journalist, Janet Street Porter was defended over her remarks and fans rushed to say "she's right".
Janet debated with fellow ITV daytime show panellists including Coleen Nolan.on the show which aired hours before Lancashire Police confirmed the body that had been found was sadly that of Nicola Bulley. Birmingham Live reported Coleen as saying: “Part of me thinks I would be happy to know, because you’d know. But then it takes away all hope”. She continued: “It is a catch-22. Nothing is going to take away that pain right now".
She continued: “And I think what we have to be aware of, before everything goes crazy again on social media, is we’ve got to respect the family, her poor partner and two kids.”
Janet joined in the debate, saying: “It has become a circus, hasn’t it?” Continuing: “Even at the weekend people were digging in the woods. Amateur detectives were digging in the woods near the spot she went missing. And filming themselves and posting it on social media. I’ve written about it. I find the whole thing utterly distasteful and distressing.”
In a column earlier this month, Janet wrote: “The neighbourhood has been besieged by amateur detectives, podcasters, influencers and dozens of complete idiots – all keen to ‘help’ an overworked police force do their job. Many of these time-wasters have got pet theories about what could have happened to Nicola. The most insensitive post random thoughts on social media and TikTok, causing even more distress to her loved ones.”
She added: “Millions of us think we could do a better job at solving any crime than the police and it’s because we spend hours every night watching bumbling coppers and lazy detectives take six hour-long episodes to solve the mystery of another dead body at the local bus stop.”
Viewers of the ITV show responded to the debate on social media. One commentator wrote: "I agree with her Fb [Facebook] is full of people who know everything about anything that’s posted on FB they think they are detectives and come up with their theories , whatever has happened to this lady no one knows only her."
Another said: "I agree with her as well, she’s right." Others, however, weren't so inline with Janet's comments. One person said: "Coming from a woman who goes on Loose Women debating stuff about other people's choices and lives". Another added: "From a woman who, herself, sticks her nose into everything."
- ITV Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30 on ITV and 1.30pm on ITV+1
