Outpouring of love for Nottingham pizza restaurant Oscar & Rosie's due to close

Customers have been ruing the loss of much-loved Nottingham pizza restaurant Oscar & Rosie's due to close at the weekend. The restaurant in Stoney Street will shut its doors on Saturday (May 27), with its owner saying the cost of living crisis has been too difficult to deal with.

The restaurant was started as a pop-up 10 years ago by defence lawyer and founder Olly Hunter, who started making pizzas in 2013. Building up a loyal following, thanks to successful pop-ups, he opened in the Stoney Street premises in 2017, having had a base in Thurland Street before.

Known for its quality and premium ingredients, and its one metre pizza, Mr Hunter announced via the brand Instagram page that the restaurant would close because the cost of living crisis "has proved too just much to deal with".

And people in Nottingham city centre were sad to hear of the loss of the independent business. Petrol station cashier Marcus Tombs, who is 33 and lives in Arnold, said: “It’s sad all these places are closing down because of the cost of living but I wish the owners well.

“I think I’ve been here once maybe and the food was great. I had a pizza and some garlic bread. Maybe they got footfall from loyal customers and college kids but it just wasn’t enough.”

Student Kai White, who is 21 and lives in the city centre, said: “I’ve never been here but it’s never nice to hear of anything closing down, independent businesses are important for customers but people’s livelihoods, too."

There was also an outpouring of love for the restaurant from Nottinghamshire Live readers. One person wrote: “Really sad to see this. Brilliant place, great pizza, GF [Gluten Free] options for us coeliacs - a real loss.

“All the best for the future.” Another person wrote: “Was only there recently with friends and I’m so sorry to hear this.”

The statement on the Oscar and Rosie's Instagram page read: "Bad news I'm afraid... After 10 years, 4 locations, 3 weddings and innumerable magic moments, Oscar & Rosie's will close its doors for the last time next Saturday 27th May. We survived the pandemic but sadly the cost of living crisis has proved too just much to deal with."
