In case you missed it, Starz recently announced the news that Outlander would be getting a prequel series. Dubbed Blood of My Blood, it will be based on the yet-to-be-written story of Jamie Fraser's parents, Brian and Ellen.
President of Original Programming Kathryn Busby has spoken to Deadline News in a bid to clear up what the news will mean for the main show, as well as clarifying how Diana Gabaldon will be involved after the author recently admitted being confused by the announcement.
Refusing to be drawn into discussions of what would happen after season 7 – mainly why season 8 hasn't been confirmed yet – Busby stated that Outlander is "very important" to Starz and they want as much of it as they possibly can have.
She said: “[The prequel will] absolutely not [take away Starz’s commitment to the original series]. What we’ve proven with the Power franchise is that we can have different lanes of storytelling around the same base. We believe that we can do that with Outlander as well. They are not mutually exclusive at all.”
As to the recent social media post by Diana which started that there had been no communication from Starz with her about the project, even though their announcement stated she would be a "Consulting Producer", Busby was quick to try to clarify the situation.
“We’re still working the details out but Diana Gabaldon will definitely be involved,” she revealed. “She is a fantastic writer and from season to season, she’s been a pleasure to work with. We are going to keep working with her.”
When asked about when work will begin on the show and if it would be based on Diana's prequel book which is still being worked on, Deadline stated that the Starz chief declined to comment.
