Outlander star Sam Heughan 'unrecognisable' in throwback snap from his 20s

Sam Heughan has captured the hearts of not only the nation but fans across the globe with his starring role in the historical romance series Outlander.

And the Scottish hunk, 43, has come a long way in his career since he first started. Even his appearance has changed significantly, which can be seen in a picture he shared from two decades ago.

Before fame, Sam was looking fresh-faced and almost unrecognisable on stage in the award-winning production of David Greig's Outlying Islands when it premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival back in 2002.

The Traverse Theatre Company shared a promotional poster featuring Sam as he made an uncanny resemblance to a character from the Twilight vampire series, sporting pale skin, red lips and bright blue eyes.

The actor was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award for Most Promising Performer for his role in the stage show, reports Hello!, with it coming two years before Sam appeared in his first professional television role in the miniseries Island at War.

The pictures have surfaced nearly 10 years since Sam was first cast as Jamie in the time-travelling drama alongside his co-stars, including his onscreen wife Caitriona Balfe.

Meanwhile, fans are eagerly awaiting the return of season seven of the popular Starz TV show which is due to be released next month on June 16.
