Sam Heughan delighted fans after taking home Esquire magazine's International Man of the Year award 2022. The Balmaclellan-born actor, who has played Jamie Fraser in Outlander since 2013, took home the award on Wednesday night after a ceremony in Spain.
The 42-year-old Scots star was in good company at the ceremony, with tennis star Rafael Nadal taking home the titular Man of the Year accolade. The Spanish sportsman has had an epic 2022, winning both the Australian Open and the French Open, as well as titles in Acapulco and Melbourne.
The Outlander actor stunned in a dark blue velvet tuxedo by Robert Cavalli on the red carpet. Heughan began his speech in Spanish, before adding: "Thank you Google translate."
He continued: "I'm afraid I'm gonna have to go into English here so I do apologise. What an incredible evening and a huge congratulations to all these iconic winners. Congratulations to Rafa, I was going to say I'm a big fan but he's left before I could challenge him to a game of tennis."
Sam paid tribute to the sportsman on social media, writing: "Thank you @esquirees, wonderful night celebrating Esquire Man of the Year 2022. Honoured to accept the International Icon and celebrate with some incredible people. Congrats to @rafaelnadal!"
Fans took to social media to praise Sam for his latest accolade. One wrote: "Congratulations Sam. Now you're an International Man of Mystery too! Well, sort of"
"Your speech was so incredibly moving. Thank you so much for advocating with your voice & platform. Always so selfless & humble. We are beyond grateful for you," penned another. A third said: "What a beautiful, humble speech you gave. You really deserved to be called “Man of the Year”! (Along with all other Moms who heard your speech - lovely that you thanked your dear Mum) Congratulations!!"
Another said: "Congratulations, Sam. Well deserved it. And what great honour for the legend Nadal," while a fifth wrote: "Congratulations Sam...I wish all men around the world were as gracious and charitable as you are, it would make this world of men much easier to navigate...thank you for being who you are!"
