Outlander's Sam Heughan opens up about most 'challenging' and 'draining' episode he filmed

Outlander star Sam Heughan has opened up about which episode was the most difficult to film over the past five seasons.

Heughan, who plays Jamie Fraser in the hit-historical TV drama, will be returning to our screens for the sixth season in March of this year and finally putting to an end what fans have been calling 'droughtlander'.

However whilst there is some exciting times ahead, the 41-year-old Scottish actor has been reflecting on past episodes and recalls a few which stand out.

According to CheatSheet, one of the most heart-wrenching episodes was season one, episode 16 called 'To Ransom a Man's Soul'.

In the episode, Jamie is saved by Claire, played by Caitriona Balfe, after being brutally raped and tortured by Blackjack Randall.

As a result, Jamie is unsurprisingly left traumatised physically and mentally and as an actor, the episode is said to have pushed him.

Speaking in an interview to TV Guide's Outlander Forever collector’s issue, Heughan recalls: "Episode 16 is one of the most challenging things I've ever filmed.

"Jamie's torture was extreme and really draining to film for cast and crew, not only for the viewer to watch."

Discussing on other episodes, the Scots-born actor said that his favourite episode included season two, episode 13 which is called 'Dragonfly in Amber' and is special to the actor as it is when Jamie and Claire had to say goodbye to each other for the first time.

He also loved season four, episode nine, 'The Birds & the Bees' which was said to be really emotional as in this episode, Jamie meets his daughter, Brianna (Sophie Skelton) for the very first time.

He added: "Jamie and Brianna finally meeting was such an iconic moment, and Sophie is so fun to work with.

"We laughed a lot while hunting bees and this episode is where we see father and daughter really bond."

Which episode was your favourite - and are you excited for the return of Outlander?

Outlander returns to Starz Play in March 2022.
