Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe have teased the highly anticipated Outlander season six finale ends on "a really good cliffhanger".
Sam, 41, from Dumfries, plays Highland warrior Jamie Fraser alongside Irish beauty Caitriona, 42, who plays Claire Fraser in the on-screen adaptation of Diana Gabaldon's novel.
Episode 8, titled "I Am Not Alone", is the final episode of the shortened season 6 with Claire standing accused of the murder of Malva Christie.
Seeking his revenge for the death of his brother, Lionel, Richard Brown has arrived with his "Committee of Safety" to arrest her and take her to trial but it appears Jamie isn't ready to let her go without a fight.
Heughan calls the hour-long episode “one of our strongest finales” and says there's “everything” in this episode for viewers.
He continues to Glamour : “There's a lot of action, but there's some really sensitive, really intimate moments with the characters, and not just Jamie and Claire. Roger and Brianna have some beautiful stuff too.”
Caitriona adds: “We didn't necessarily plan on ending at this episode when we started this season, but it felt like a really, really good point to take that break.”
Heughan agrees: “Personally, and I think probably for Caitriona as well, this was the hardest season to shoot because of all the factors that are going on.”
He explains: "It's interesting that I think [it feels] really deliberate despite being half the size of other ones. It's packed full of stuff.”
As for the “stuff” Heughan refers to, “I Am Not Alone” features a road wagon trip of sorts that gives the episode a unique, standalone feel.
“It sort of has this very Westernish element to it, but also it's that whole thing of that frontier man traveling through all these little towns and seeing what that was like at that point,”
Balfe says: “It's great.”
Hopefully fans won't have long to wait after the sixth season finale airs, as season seven started filming in Scotland last month.
Due to Covid-19, Outlander viewers had an almost two-year wait, dubbed 'Droughtlander', between the explosive season five finale and when season six aired.
Caitriona thanked fans on Twitter after the filming news broke: "Here we go …. Season 7!!!!!! What????? Hard to imagine what we thought might be one season in 2013 is still going and we have all you amazing fans to thank!!!!!"
