Outdoor markets could be making a midweek return to a Merseyside town.
Sefton Council has recommended that outdoor markets return to Market Street in Southport on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The council is looking to extend the offering of markets from the monthly Makers Market that has proved to be a popular addition to the town's high street. Now, it looks as though outdoor market stalls will line Market Street for the next 12 months starting in August.
A report has been published to seek approval for the progression of a temporary traffic regulation order which has been made in a bid to "improve the revival of Southport indoor market following the recent covid pandemic, the manager of the market and the service manager of tourism have requested that an outdoor market be introduced on Market Street". It also states that this will be in addition to the market that occupies Market Street and King Street on the first Sunday of each month.

The report also states that the market will operate between 10am and 5pm along Market Street, but also notes that this could be extended during the summer months and would be Wednesday and Thursday of each week "provisionally". The stalls would be placed on the road, with walkways remaining clear for pedestrians.
The temporary traffic regulation order will be in operation for the duration of the market between 5am and 8pm to allow stallholders to set up the market stalls and dismantle them at the end of the day. It has been recommended that the order be approved and start on Wednesday, August 3.
