Our Message to Europe: Leave a light on, we will be back

WE asked our readers what their message would be to our European friends – below is a selection of their responses.

People of Europe: Scotland’s democratically elected Parliament is being ignored and subdued by the UK Government. We were taken out of Europe against our wishes and lost our rights as European citizens. Please help us stand against the UK Government who seek to prevent our independence so that we can rejoin the European family of nations.

Liz Lowery, 61, Abernathy, Perth

I was born in Poland, but moved to Scotland with my parents as a child, and Scotland is my home. The Scotland I know and love is inclusive, outward-looking and internationalist – and Brexit is not in our name. We didn’t vote for it, we won’t tolerate it, and we will resist it.

The Westminster government thinks it can just ignore Scotland’s democratic will, and Labour think they can throw Scotland under the Brexit bus at any cost. They’re wrong.

Despite being dragged out of the EU, Scotland will remain a proud European nation – and we will be back, so we can help build the fairer, greener, more equal Europe for all. Just keep the light on for us, EU!

Olaf Stando, 27, Burntisland, Fife

My family was split due to Brexit. My Polish wife, and our two sons born in Scotland, all have European passports. I don’t – and not by choice. I want to be a proud Scot as part of the European family again!

David Greenhill, 59, Midlothian

Please keep the door open for us.

Tony Kilcullen, 62, Fife

Leave a light on for Scotland. I feel like our democracy is being battered by a malevolent and corrupt Westminster. The “union of equals” is patently a lie and we are not willing partners. Scotland must regain its independence.

Joan Coverley, 65. Moray Coast

Scotland did not get a say when we were dragged out of the European Union. I want Scotland to be outward-looking, equal, co-operative, innovative and European. I want Europe to know that we will be back in the family of nations, and that moment can’t come soon enough.

Luke Buchan, 17, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire

Scotland never voted to Leave, we all accept that and miss the opportunities that being a member of the EU means.

I don’t think there will ever not be a desire to rejoin with the other member states to proactively be united in diversity and collaboration. I hope that this may happen someday soon

Michael, 23, North Ayrshire

Scotland is Europe and we will be back, so light fires of freedom so that we can navigate true seas of darkness.

Charles Stasiukenas, 29, Edinburgh

Please keep a light on – if not for me, then for Scotland’s future generations. We want to be a country, not a colony of England.

Sarah Black, 74, Strachur, Argyl
