Our House: Martin Compston says Greenock pals would mock Scottish 'phone voice' on ITV thriller

Popular Scottish actor Martin Compston spoke to host Lorraine Kelly this morning on the ITV daytime programme Lorraine about his new drama Our House.

Martin stars in the ITV thriller as estranged husband Bram Lawson, married to Fi Lawson (Tuppence Middleton).

Fans of the show have praised Martin's ability to bring some humanity into a flawed character like Bram, as Lorraine commented on his natural accent coming through on the show.

Martin said: "Yeah, my pals from Greenock would probably say that this is my posh phone voice.

“In terms of when you start a project like this, it’s just easier to use your own voice.

"Although at the same time, with playing Bram on paper he does some terrible, terrible things, so I kind of need to try and make him charming.

"So I think using my own Scottish accent helps a wee bit with that."

Martin also mentioned on the daytime programme that he has been dabbling a bit of the historic Scottish language, Gaelic, in accordance with filming his new documentary on the nation.

The 37-year-old said: "I’m really looking forward to this, I’m going around with my pal Phil McHugh, it all kind of started because I am tentatively learning Gaelic, and Phil is a fluent speaker in the language, so we were talking about where does Gaelic sit in modern Scotland?

“And then, we took it to the BBC and it really evolved from there, and going around meeting as many people as we can, seeing places and trying to find where Gaelic as a language sits in modern Scotland.

“It makes you feel a bit old but it’s all good. I’m really looking forward to it but I cannot lie, running about Scotland with one of your pals is gonna be a good laugh.”

The final episode of ITV's Our House will air on the channel tonight at 9pm, with all three previous instalments available to view on the ITV Hub.
