For the first time ever, a movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe earned an Academy Award nomination in an acting category, thanks to Angela Bassett’s stunning performance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Marvel movies have, of course, earned previous Oscar nominations and wins, but this is the first time an actor has been honored.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever earned five total nominations this year, including for Visual Effects, Original Song (“Lift Me Up”), Costume Design and Makeup and Hairstyling, along with Bassett’s Best Supporting Actress nom.
Bassett is up against Hong Chau in The Whale, Kerry Condon in The Banshees of Inisherin, Stephanie Hsu in Everything Everywhere All at Once and Jamie Lee Curtis in Everything Everywhere All at Once.
This year’s Academy Awards aren’t until March 12, so if you’re looking to catch up on some of the top films honored this year, we’ve got you covered.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will be available to stream on Disney+ on Feb. 1, 2023, but it’s also still in theaters.
