Purple loosestrife came to North America in the 1800s with European settlers, and some of the plant was brought in specifically for ornamental and medicinal purposes. The perennial wetland plant eventually spread through waterways and disturbed wetlands across the United States, with an estimate cited by government land managers that puts its range at about 500,000 acres across the northern United States and southern Canada.
