Baby boy battles infant botulism after ByHeart formula donated to family

A 10-month-old boy in Portland, Oregon, is battling infant botulism after consuming contaminated ByHeart baby formula, which was donated through a scheme assisting low-income and homeless families. Ashaan Carter has been hospitalised twice and remains reliant on a feeding tube following the dangerous infection, which has affected more than 50 infants across the US.

His mother, Angel Carter, stated she received a can of the formula from an Oregon Department of Human Services case worker in early November, just days before a national recall was issued. Ms Carter, who receives state support for food and housing, explained she had been exclusively breastfeeding her son but her milk supply was diminishing. The 27-year-old was reportedly told by the case worker that the ByHeart formula was "closest to breast milk" and could provide assistance.
