Opposition files National Human Rights Commission plaint over worker’s suicide

Vijayawada: Opposition parties in AP have lodged a plaint with National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) alleging that one Udayagiri Narayana (38), a Dalit man from Kandamooru village in Nellore rural, committed suicide following police harassment after a theft plaint was lodged against him.

Senior TDP leader Varla Ramaiah in his complaint to the NHRC called for action against those responsible for Narayana’s death.

Narayana, a labourer from Kandamooru, was working at a brick factory near Gayatri Sugar Factory in Podalakuru mandal. Suspecting Narayana to be behind the theft of electrical equipment from the sugar factory, the owner lodged a plaint against him. Narayana was interrogated by the police and sent away. The next day, he was found hanging from a tree in a forested area. ASP (admin) Himawati has launched an internal probe into allegations by TDP leaders.

“The postmortem report states that there were bruises on Narayana’s body,” Ramaiah said.

He also sought a comprehensive investigation into the incident, justice for the victim’s family and compensation from the government for the victim’s family.
