Opponents of cancelled Bluegrass Station airport expansion say they feel heard

Opponents of the proposed airport and airpark at Bluegrass Station had a very good day Thursday. Governor Andy Beshear released a statement opposing the expansion because of a lack of local support, Bourbon Fiscal Court passed a similar resolution, and the military industrial park’s director declared it closed. Rebecca Rigney hosted a rally against the project last week.

“Do you and the other folks who are against this project, feel pretty confident that at least in the near future, it's not going to happen?”

“At least for the time being. I mean, while I've been talking to you, I see that the Bluegrass Station Airport has a on their website said that the project is closed.”

Rigney was at the fiscal court meeting and said after the anti-airport expansion resolution passed, she called a neighbor and they shared happy tears.

“So we felt very just proud and happy, because there was a lot of naysayers that our voices wouldn't matter. And this was just going to happen irregardless of what we said, because we're just farmers out here.”

Adding an airport and airpark would have required thousands of acres of new land, some of which belongs to people like Rigney who say they don’t want to sell.
