OPINION - You think London's Tube is bad for crime? Why I'm not surprised a woman was set on fire on New York's Subway

New York Police walk through the Mount Eden subway station - (AP)

So, this is what the end of civilization looks like: a sleeping woman set alight on New York’s Subway by a man using a lighter at 7:30am on a Sunday morning, causing her to burn to death.

It’s a truly shocking story to come out of one of the world’s great cities, and I wish I was surprised. But, sadly, I am not. The Big Apple’s underground service has become untenable. It is the Wild West down there, where any sense of law and order appears to have dissipated. Brave New Yorkers I know will risk it in the daytime, if they have to. No one dares venture there at night anymore. Ubers costing over $50 and chock-a-block traffic are now an unavoidable city tax.
