OPINION - The Leader podcast: Workplace burnout & hitting ‘permacrisis’

We’re all living in a state of “permacrisis”, so say lexicographers at Collins English Dictionary, who recently crowned it word of the year.

Now a study’s suggesting the stress fallout from this delightful armageddon-inspired portmanteau is seeping into our workplaces - with young Gen Z staff members worst impacted.

So could a four-day week help balance things out?

Another survey published on Tuesday found no drop in productivity among respondents testing the new working pattern - and staff actually brought in more revenue over just four days, while incidents of burnout and sick days were reportedly fewer.

The Leader podcast is joined by Heidi Chow, executive director of Debt Justice, a Bethnal Green-based charity, who reveals the results of their own six-month trial to see if a four-day week could help staff “work smarter” and improve colleagues’ wellbeing.

You can also hear the boss of mental health app Headspace, Russell Glass, speaking to our sister podcast, How to be a CEO, about his top tips for freeing up brain bandwidth on those dreaded Zoom video calls.
