Rishi Sunak could be forgiven for looking at the state of the polls (the Tories trail Labour by 20 points) the state of his party (it could face a further by-election thanks to yet another misbehaving MP) and the state of the world (gestures broadly at everything) and feel somewhat discouraged.
So rather than dwelling on that, I think it's useful to look at how we got here. And to do that, we need to turn back to 25 October 2022, the day Sunak became prime minister, to see what has happened to him, his party and the economy in the year since.
