There is no question to which Angela Rayner is the answer, unless the question be how to surmount bad press from questionable tax arrangements (simple… resign; then ignore it). Yet the woman whose tax affairs are still under investigation by HM Revenue and Customs, appears to have begun the soft launch of what looks like a leadership bid from a pub in Westminster where she addressed a group of leftie Labour MPs this week about where Keir Starmer is going wrong.
Her most striking line was that it was “unBritish” for the Government to seek to change immigration legislation whereby arrivals would have to wait longer than the existing six years before being able to claim citizenship. “UnBritish?” This is political speak, whereby terms are precisely the opposite of what they’re understood to be. It is in fact, Humpty Dumpty-speak…as in the episode where he tells Alice in Looking Glass World that "When I use a word... it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less”.
