OPINION - Dylan Jones: Keir Starmer should copy Donald Trump and end working from home for lazy civil servants

President Donald Trump arrives to speak at the 2025 House Republican Members Conference Dinner at Trump National Doral Miami - (AP)

Boom! In a rather terse email sent on Tuesday, Donald Trump told federal government workers they had to decide by Thursday of next week whether they wanted to be part of a hastily arranged “deferred resignation” programme. His email said that if they agreed by that date to quit their jobs in September, they would receive about eight months’ worth of salary as a severance package. Nice.

In addition, he also stated that he wants all the civil servants who choose to stay to come into work five days a week. Not four, not three, and not – like many of their British counterparts – two. No, in a move which should be celebrated, he wants them to work properly. He wants them to come to the office in the morning, do their jobs, then go home. Five times a week. Like everyone used to. There are many decisions he’s made since last week that I’m not fully behind, but this one? Well, it couldn’t have come at a better time.
