Here we are, the year of Donald Trump. Of course, we have already had quite a number of years of Trump. But, as he would say, this is the big one. Will it elect him?
It’s a pretty basic electoral proposition: an all-consuming Trump against an ever-receding Joe Biden. Does Trump every day, many times a day, insulting, assaulting, endlessly talking, filling all spaces with weirdness and balderdash, loudly taking on all comers in the multiple fights of his life, invite revulsion or acquiescence (that is, beyond the hardcore that it inspires)? Does Biden’s basic lack of effect, almost physical transparence, evident frustration or disgust with the demand for theatrics, and, all in all, shuffling back-office demeanour, create feelings of hopelessness or relief?
