OpenAI Used Its Own AI to Catch an Alleged Spy — But the $4 Billion Security Risk May Just Be Starting

OpenAI disclosed that it deployed its own AI models to trace a sophisticated surveillance device hidden inside an executive conference room, leading to the arrest of Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old Saudi national and OpenAI engineer, in what the Department of Justice is treating as one of the most significant corporate espionage cases in the AI sector to date.

Alfozan, who joined OpenAI in July 2025, was charged with using or endeavoring to use a device to intercept oral communications — a federal wiretapping offense — after investigators discovered a recording device wrapped in toilet paper and concealed within a USB port, with the DOJ alleging he used AI tools to strategize the optimal placement of the surveillance equipment.
