American golf star Jordan Spieth has stirred up talk on social media for his ice cream eating technique. The American was captured with a sweet treat during a practice round at The Open yesterday, but any poise he usually shows with the club in his hand was lacking while he handled the ice cream.
The 28-year-old attempted an unconventional method to eat ice cream by taking a few quick bites. However, some of it ended up all over his face before handing the unfinished cone to his agent. It is unknown whether Spieth was really hungry, really hot, or was just in need of a sugar boost but the clip of the three-time major winner demolishing a 99 Flake ice cream drew plenty of responses from fans on social media.
Twitter user @comoshane added: “I got brain freeze watching this,” while @CrazyGoodKids said: “Ravaging that creamy treat.” @MrJohnnypeanuts added: “Going at it like he’s never seen I’ve cream before! Either that or really worried the wind was gonna take it away.”
Follower @jmoore3309 added: “You gotta be careful with the Flake part. The chocolate could easily wreck your shirt. LOL.” Finally, @SiobhanPycroft chuckled: “Working up an appetite ready to smash it! this kind of hunger, whimsy and improvisation on the course is why he’ll bring it home.” Last week Spieth dismissed rumours he was considering joining the Saudi LIV Golf series.
While the likes of his US compatriots Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Reed and Brooks Koepka have signed up with the Saudi-backed circuit, Spieth reiterated that he is committed to the PGA Tour and endeavours to win more major titles. In a post on his official Twitter account, he wrote: "Because of false reporting today, I feel the need to comment.
"Let me be clear, any reports that I am contemplating competing anywhere other than the PGA Tour are categorically untrue. I am NOT in discussions with LIV.
"I have been quoted on the record for months that I fully support the PGA Tour and have never considered any alternatives.
"My goal has not changed since I began playing golf – to win PGA Tour events and major championships and to compete against the best players in the world. Those who truly know me, know what is important to me."
The British Open commenced earlier today and is expected to draw a record attendance of 290,000. It will be the 30th time that golf's oldest major has been held over the Old Course. Spieth will begin his campaign at 3.10pm today and will aim to win at The Open for the second time.
