Only 112 patients have chosen to become completely undiscoverable in Care Everywhere, the Epic Systems network that providers use to exchange about 22 million patient records each day, according to an investigation published by STAT with CalMatters and The Markup. The full opt-out option launched in August 2025.
The low number may say less about patient comfort with sharing than about how hard it is to opt out. The investigation found that patients are included by default, that there is no single place to opt out, and that people who try can run into unanswered requests, notarization demands, and staff who give inaccurate information.
