One year after Tigray ceasefire, Ethiopia remains fractured and right abuses persist

It has been exactly one year since the Pretoria Peace Accords were signed, putting an end to two years of civil war in Tigray, one of the deadliest conflicts of the last 30 years. Yet more than a million displaced people have still not been able to return home and over 40 percent of the population is still suffering from a lack of food. We review the situation with FRANCE 24's Clothilde Hazard in Addis Ababa.

Over in Uganda, the NGO Human Rights Watch is sounding the alarm over a crackdown on those opposed to the mega oil project by French company TotalEnergies. The environmental consequences of drilling in a natural park and the construction of a giant oil pipeline are the subject of criticism. However, according to the NGO, authorities in Kampala are "suppressing the freedom of expression" of environmental activists. Back in September 2022, the European Parliament had already condemned human rights violations related to the construction projects.

Finally, South Africa's national rugby team the Springboks returned home on Thursday after winning the Rugby World Cup in Paris last Saturday. The team were met with thunderous applause as they commenced their victory tour across the country, with thousands lining the streets to catch a glimpse of the winning team and trophy. The joy also spread to Soweto, the township that once hated the Springboks as a symbol of White oppression. We take a look at how the victory has united the country.
