A woman has died and a man is injured after a tree fell on a car north-west of Melbourne this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to a single vehicle incident at South Rock Road in Woodend just after 2.30pm.

Police said a female passenger died at the scene, while a male driver was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said an injured person taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital was in a stable condition.

Police are working to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the crash, with an investigation ongoing.

SES units from Sunbury, Gisborne and Woodend responded and an SES spokesperson said an arborist had been called to attend.

CFA had one crew on scene to assist with the removal of the tree.

Police have urged anyone who witnessed the crash and has dashcam footage or other information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to submit a confidential report online.
