One Number Away in Saturday's Sept. 5 Powerball Jackpot Drawing: Inside the Odessa Ticket That Won $1 Million

Powerball lottery officials confirmed that the winner was a “mystery” as the lucky entry was not registered to a player card, but the winning entry came from a Tatts outlet in inner Melbourne. This is a representational image. (Credit: Joe Raedle/Getty Images)
  • September 5, 2026's winning numbers were 15, 40, 47, 53 and 59, with a Powerball of 9 and a 2x Power Play multiplier.
  • Nobody matched all six numbers, so the jackpot rolls over again.
  • A ticket sold in Odessa, Texas matched all five white balls for a flat $1 million — the only prize at that tier nationwide.
  • The jackpot climbs to an estimated $190 million for Monday, September 7.

No one walked away with the Powerball jackpot after Saturday night's drawing, but a single ticket bought at a gas station in West Texas turned a two-dollar wager into a flat $1 million payout. The rollover pushes the multistate game's top prize into Monday's drawing, continuing a winless run that traces back to the middle of August.

Saturday's Winning Combination

Lottery officials drew 15, 40, 47, 53 and 59 as the white balls, pairing them with a red Powerball of 9, according to official results published by USA Mega. Players who paid extra for the Power Play multiplier saw their non-jackpot prizes doubled, since Saturday's multiplier landed on 2x. A separate add-on drawing, Powerball's Double Play, produced its own set that night — 21, 24, 30, 47 and 60, with a Powerball of 5 — giving ticket holders who paid for the option a second shot at cash prizes using the same play slip.

One Texas Ticket, One Million Dollars

While the headline prize went unclaimed, a single ticket sold at a Road Ranger convenience store on West Interstate 20 in Odessa got all five main numbers but missed the Powerball — a combination that pays a guaranteed $1 million no matter how large the jackpot grows. It was the only ticket in the country to hit that tier for Saturday's drawing. Dozens of smaller prizes were also handed out nationwide, ranging from a few dollars for matching the Powerball alone up to six-figure sums for players who matched four numbers, the Powerball, and the Power Play multiplier.

A Jackpot Rebuilt From Scratch

Saturday's prize had been climbing since a ticket sold in Illinois swept all six numbers on August 12 to win an estimated $1.04 billion, one of the largest prizes Powerball has ever paid out. The jackpot then reset to a modest starting point and grew with every drawing that produced no winner. Texas Lottery's official records put the prize at $146 million ahead of the September 2 drawing, meaning it added roughly $27 million in the three days leading up to Saturday night — a pace that's typical for Powerball once ticket sales pick up alongside a growing jackpot.

What a Ticket Costs and Where to Buy One

A Powerball play still costs $2, with the odds of matching all six numbers for the jackpot sitting at about 1 in 292.2 million. The game is sold across 45 U.S. states plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Its reach stretched overseas for the first time this year, too — British retailers began selling Powerball tickets in July, marking the game's first expansion beyond U.S. borders.

When's the Next Drawing?

The next numbers are drawn Monday, September 7 at 10:59 p.m. ET, following the game's usual Monday-Wednesday-Saturday schedule. With Saturday's jackpot left unclaimed, the estimated prize has already climbed to $190 million for Monday night, with a cash option in the neighborhood of $82 million. Anyone holding a ticket from Saturday's drawing should check every prize tier rather than assume a miss, since Powerball pays out on nine separate levels beyond the jackpot. Claim rules vary from state to state — Texas gives winners 180 days from the draw date to come forward — and prizes above a few hundred dollars typically require an in-person claim rather than a payout at the retail counter.
