Lexington city leaders are reminding nonprofits and other groups that the deadline to apply for gun violence prevention grants is next Friday, April 5th. At a news conference in City Hall Wednesday, Mayor Linda Gorton said the grant program, now in its third year, helped reduce the number of homicides from 44 in 2022 to 24 last year.
“Applications should focus on messaging, or community events, gun violence reduction programming, or be comprehensive projects addressing these initiatives.”
One Lexington was formed in 2017 to coordinate city activities addressing violent crime. In 2022, the gun violence prevention grants were added to its portfolio. One Lexington Director Devine Carama:
“A lot of the communities that we go to people have lived there 30, 40 years, so they're invested. And so how can we encourage them to be a part of this fight? And so this grant opportunity is open to all nonprofits.”
Carama said grassroots organizations that don’t have 501-C3 status can partner with a nonprofit that does. A total of $100,000 is available, with grant maximums of $7,500.
