Tragedy struck in Indianapolis early Sunday morning as one person lost their life and five others, including a police officer, were wounded during a shooting incident. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department provided details of the incident, which occurred in the 9400 block on East Washington Street.
According to Chief Christopher Bailey, two off-duty police officers, stationed at a bar in full uniform, were confronted with a disturbance in the parking lot around 1:30 a.m. The officers engaged in gunfire with at least one suspect, resulting in one officer sustaining a gunshot wound to the upper thigh and a shoulder injury. The injured officer is reported to be in stable condition and is expected to be discharged from the hospital on Sunday.
Upon the arrival of additional officers at the scene, four more individuals were discovered with gunshot wounds. All four victims were promptly transported to nearby hospitals with injuries deemed non-life-threatening. The victims included two 45-year-old men, a 42-year-old man, and a 33-year-old woman, as confirmed by Chief Bailey.
Shortly after the incident, a man arrived at Community East Hospital in Indianapolis with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. Despite efforts from medical staff, the man succumbed to his injuries. Detectives have reason to believe that the deceased individual was connected to the shooting. The Marion County Coroner’s Office will release the man's identity once his next of kin have been notified, Chief Bailey stated.
