One Direction 'couldn't be outside' for Xtra Factor appearance with Melvin Odoom

One Direction had thousands of fans following their every move, including TV studios Melvin Odoom has revealed.

The presenter interviewed the chart-mauling group on The Xtra Factor, prior to their appearance on the main show in 2015 singing their hit History.

However, while the lads may have looked relaxed on both shows, presenter Melvin admits that this wasn't the case behind the scenes for some people.

At the time of the interview, One Direction were at the height of their fame, selling out studios across the globe with millions of fans taking to the streets to show their support.

But away from the glitz and glamour, Melvin explained that he was more than relaxed.

Speaking to the Mirror, the 42-year-old said: "You know what I think that the lucky thing for me was that obviously came from radio.

"So we had that training and myself, Ricky and Charlie when we do our show on Radio One, or the main thing is we want to make sure that artists leave having a good time.

"Roch was an artist, she knows the questions that she wants to be asked, it was the perfect combination – that's when One Direction were huge."

He went on to add: "We couldn't even be outside for that interview, I remember we were in a trailer doing it.

"I remember kind of beforehand, there was a lot of faffing around and people being like, 'One Direction are coming in', but as soon as we walked in, we've done this one million times, we've interviewed people like Jamie Foxx, Denzel Washington and Rihanna, some big stars and everyone's human.

"I think they just wanted to be treated that way."

Following the news that the show may be returning to Channel 5, Melvin revealed that while the main show was "serious" he and Rochelle could get away with pranking the judges.

"I have a really special place in my heart for that show," Melvin said, before adding: "If it came back, I would love to do it again."

Car lover teamed up with Motorpoint for their Motormind quiz and admits his decision to agree was the "quickest yes", adding: "I'm a big music fan, I've been working in radio for 16 years and any producer will tell you that the car is the best place to play music."

Reflecting on Motorpoint, he said: "They have everything, I generally buy second-hand cars and with Motorpoint, you know you're getting something which is next to new and you're getting something with low mileage."
