One dead in horror two-vehicle crash as gardai shut road overnight

A woman has died in a horrific collision a car and a van in Co Mayo.

It happened on the R319, west of Achill Sound, at around 5.30pm.

The driver and only person in the car - a woman aged in her 80s - was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her body has been removed to Mayo University Hospital where a post-mortem will take place.

Gardai say the occupants of the van were not seriously injured.

Emergency services are currently at the scene and the road will remain closed overnight. Local diversions are in place.

Gardai are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to contact them.

A spokesperson said: "Gardai are currently at the scene of a fatal road traffic collision that occurred this evening, Friday, 24th March 2023 at Achill Sound, County Mayo.

"The collision, which involved a car and a van, occurred on the R319, west of Achill Sound, at approximately 5:30pm.

"The driver and sole occupant of the car, a woman in her early 80s, was pronounced dead a short time later. Her body has since been removed to Mayo University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course. The occupants of the van were not seriously injured.

"The R319 at the scene is currently closed to facilitate examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. The road will remain closed overnight with local diversions in place.

"Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this incident to come forward. Road users with camera footage (including dash cam) who were travelling on the R319 between Achill Sound and Keel at the time of the collision are asked to make it available to investigating Gardaí."

UPDATE: An earlier version of this story stated a pedestrian was also involved in this collision. Gardai have since amended their press release to say that no pedestrian was involved.
