Adults who condensed all 75 weekly minutes of high-intensity interval training into a single session lost about as much body fat over 16 weeks as adults who split the same minutes across three sessions. Both groups beat a control group that attended health education classes instead.
The randomized trial, published in Nature Communications on January 10, enrolled 315 inactive Chinese adults in Hong Kong with overweight and central obesity. It matters mainly for one reason: the most common barrier to exercise is time, and this trial tested whether frequency or total volume does the work.
The honest framing is more modest than the headline suggests. Fat loss in both groups was real but small, and several cardiometabolic markers people expect exercise to move did not budge.
Same Weekly Minutes, Different Number of Trips to the Gym
Researchers at the University of Hong Kong's School of Public Health randomly assigned participants in equal thirds: once-weekly interval training, three-times-weekly interval training, or a control group attending a two-and-a-half-hour health education class every other week. This was a single-center, assessor-blinded, three-group trial. Enrollment ran from September 1, 2021 to November 23, 2023, and data collection finished on September 7, 2024.
Both exercise groups performed 12 high-intensity intervals per week, totaling 75 minutes. The once weekly group completed all of them in a single visit, with rest between bouts. The thrice weekly group did one bout per visit. Assessments came at baseline, week 16, and week 32.
Modest Fat Loss and a Meaningful Fitness Gain
At week 16, both exercise groups had reduced total body fat mass relative to controls, with reductions on the order of one kilogram and relative decreases of a few percentage points from baseline, while the control group stayed flat.
