'On his way' - Manchester United target Cody Gakpo compared with two Netherlands legends at World Cup

Manchester United target Cody Gakpo has been compared with Netherlands heroes Wesley Sneijder and Dennis Bergkamp as he continues to light up the World Cup in Qatar.

Gakpo, 23, netted for the third game running as Louis van Gaal and his players made it through to the last-16 with seven points from three Group A matches. Gakpo was on target against Senegal, Ecuador and most-recently host nation Qatar at the Al-Bayt Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

The tournament has propelled Gakpo on the global stage after a stunning start to the domestic season with PSV where he has scored 15 goals and provided 18 assists in 29 appearances. United were heavily linked with his signature during the summer and could yet come back in for the forward.

Gakpo was subject to hot debate before the Netherlands match as former England playmaker Joe Cole was among those to wax lyrical about him on the ITV Sport panel. Cole said: " Exciting young player, one I earmarked at the start of the tournament who might do well."

Cole continued: "S cores goals, can dribble, good movement off the ball, all the big clubs in the Premier League will be looking at this kid. He joins an illustrious group, if he gets three goals in three World Cup games, with the likes of [Wesley] Sneijder and [Dennis] Bergkamp.

"He's not moving in them places just yet, but he'll be on his way. Really exciting young player."

When analysing his goal, Cole said: "The finish from Gakpo was exceptional, because the ball was just getting away from him. He's been the most impressive player on the pitch."
