We have experienced a challenging winter since the first cases of the Omicron variant were identified in late November. There was exponential growth of the variant and in London, a ten-fold rise in daily cases, increasing hospitalisations and outbreaks in community settings including schools, workplaces and care homes. That spread was alarming.
Now, as rapidly as we went up, we are coming down on the other side of the Omicron wave and have cause for optimism. From the record case numbers at the peak before New Year, we are seeing strong declines in key indicators such as all-age case rates, hospitalisations and the number of people infected by those with Covid.
