Olly Murs has come under fire over his new song I Hate You When You're Drunk.
Fans have taken to social media in their droves calling for his new single to be axed after taking offence to his "misogynistic" lyrics.
The single has sparked fury from listeners who have branded the track "misogynistic, cruel and a terrible song in so many ways".
The lyrics, which have ruffled feathers among Olly's fans, are: "Oh you’re slurring all your words / There’s makeup on your shirt /You’re dancing on the tables can’t you see / That you look like a mess and you’re singing Whitney whoa / Oh I hate you, hate you, I hate you, hate you when you’re drunk.
"Oh you got them drunken eyes / Should we call it a night / Cos you’ve been telling stories 4/5 times / Yeah I’ve heard it before and my ears are bleeding whoa."
Leading the fierce debate on Twitter, DJ Shaun Keavney hit out at the star.
"Olly Murs is quite the sad, controlling boyfriend according to the lyrics of his new song, “I Hate You When You’re Drunk”. I look forward to her reply song “I Hate You When You Sing", he wrote.
More than 2,300 liked the Tweet, with others going on to comment.
One Twitter user typed: "According to his fans, the song is supposed to be self-deprecating...", while another said: "Honestly saw the lyrics and it kicked off a panic attack thanks to previous coercive control relationship. How the f**k this stuff gets made still is beyond me."
A third chimed: "Song is an abomination in every respect and it would be great if it wasn’t on the playlist. Coercive control anyone? “Why am I the only one who don’t laugh?” Well that may be your clue right there Olly."
However others leapt to the singer's defence.
One fan wrote: "It’s not about his fiancée! If you listen to it and look at his socials it’s clearly about himself!", while another added: "Nothing wrong with that lyric? As someone who gave up drinking a few years ago, some drunk people can be horrific to be around. The sober person taxi pick ups Iv had to do are the stuff of nightmares".
Speaking about the meaning behind the controversial lyrics before the backlash, Olly said the song is light-hearted joke.
"I thought it was a fun song to write as there have been so many times where a friend, family member or loved one has had one too many.
"It’s a light-hearted take from the sober person’s point of view. We all know someone!"
Mirror Online has contacted Olly's representatives for comment
Olly previously took to Instagram to share a clip of himself singing the song to his fiancée Amelia Tank for the first time.
The gym fanatic was visibly shocked by the lyrics, with the X Factor star even poking fun at her stunned reaction in the caption of the video.
Opening her mouth in surprise, Amelia said: "Wow".
He wrote in caption: "Think she took it quite well #ihateyouwhenyouredrunk", alongside a grimacing face emoji.
