It’s been a good few days for Russell T. Davies.
The Doctor Who writer’s Channel 4 series It’s A Sin is up for 11 Bafta TV awards, and this week collected three RTS awards.
The hard-hitting series tracked a group of gay men and their friends as they navigated the UK’s HIV/Aids crisis in the 1980s and early 90s.
Russell is up for the writer drama category at the Baftas, and Years and Years singer Olly Alexander is nominated for his role as Ritchie Tozer, which he described as an “honour”.
He is up against David Thewlis for Landscapers, Hugh Quarshie for ITV ’s Stephen, Samuel Adewunmi for BBC ’s You Don’t Know Me, Sean Bean for Time and Stephen Graham for C4’s Help.
His co-star Lydia West has been nominated in the leading actress category, alongside Kate Winslet for Mare Of Easttown; Denise Gough and Emily Watson for ITV’s Too Close, alongside Jodie Comer for Channel 4 drama Help, and Niamh Algar for Channel 4’s Deceit.
The It’s A Sin cast have three nominations in the supporting actor category, with Callum Scott Howells, David Carlyle and Omari Douglas.
They’re going up against Nonso Anozie, star of Netflix ’s Sweet Tooth and Matthew Macfadyen in Succession. Holby City is nominated in the continuing drama category – after the series came to an end on Tuesday night following 23 years on screen.
Comedian Sean Lock, who died from cancer last year, has received a posthumous nomination for Channel 4’s 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown, in the entertainment performance category.
The category also features Alison Hammond, nominated for BBC’s I Can See Your Voice, while Dave’s Big Zuu, Graham Norton, Joe Lycett and Michael McIntyre are also in the running.
Comedian Richard Ayoade will host the Virgin Media Bafta TV Awards ceremony for the third year as it returns to London’s Royal Festival Hall on May 8.
