Ollie Cooper to sign long-term Swansea City contract as youngster's transformation revealed

Ollie Cooper is set to sign a new contract with Swansea City.

The Welshman has excelled since coming into the first team earlier this season and has played a key role in the Swans' surge up the Championship table.

Cooper has netted three goals in his last four appearances, the most recent of which came in Sunday's 2-0 derby triumph over rivals Cardiff City at the Swansea.com Stadium.

His current deal was due to expire next summer, although the club did hold the option to extend that contract by 12 months.

But, ahead of the Swans' trip to Bristol City, Cooper will put pen to paper on fresh terms that will keep him with his boyhood club until the summer of 2027.

Such has been the 22-year-old's run of form, Cooper has been mentioned in the running for a place in Wales manager Rob Page's 26-man World Cup squad. And Martin admitted Cooper has gone on to thrive for the Swans as a result of his loan spell with Newport County last season.

"He needed to go and find some character and belief. We knew he had real technical ability. He'd been a little bit hurt here because he felt he deserved chances earlier than he got them," the Swansea boss said about Cooper on the EFL Podcast.

"Sometimes you just need to take a step back to move forward. For us it was about keeping him close in Newport. We went to watch a lot of games of his. He had a brilliant experience there under a couple of different managers. It was really good for him.

"He came back in pre-season and he looked great physically. He just looked different because he'd had 40-odd games in League Two which is so important for a player's development.

"Because he knew he was going to then come back to us and put himself in a really good place which he did, the next challenge for Ollie has been about believing in himself that he deserves to be on the pitch and having the impact he has.

"He's such a quiet, humble boy. He's an incredible learner and gets it. He can play in a few positions and he's been really pivotal in our run of form. The fans love him, the other players love him because he has so much energy, he's so tenacious. He's really set the tone for the other players."
