Olivia Wilde urged to 'boycott' Golden Globes after 'shocking and embarrassing' snub

Olivia Wilde has been urged to "boycott" the Golden Globe Awards in order to send "a clear and loud message" after no women were nominated in the category for best director.

The 38-year-old had topped the predictions with her film Don't Worry Darling, but failed to land a nod when the nominations were announced.

Instead, James Cameron was nominated for his highly-anticipated Avatar sequel, alongside Martin McDonagh for The Banshees Of Insherin.

Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner received a nod for The Fablemens, as well as Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert for Everything Everywhere All At Once and Baz Luhrmann for Elvis.

A celebrity PR expert has branded the lack of diversity as "shocking and embarrassing" and told The Mirror the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, who conduct the annual awards, should "hang their heads in shame".

Mayah Riaz, celebrity PR, said: "It's shocking and it's embarrassing. Those deserving of nominees would be feeling upset and angry that we are talking about this again.

"I think the Hollywood Foreign Press Association need to hang their heads in shame.

"We can't stay silent about this, otherwise this will continue to keep happening."

Mayah added: "One of the deserving nominees is Olivia Wilde for Don't Worry Darling. Before the nomination list was revealed, she topped the predictions list.

"I imagine Olivia is feeling disappointed and angry at this snub and would see it as vindictive. How else can it be viewed?

"If I was advising Olivia, I would state that she boycotts the Golden Globes to send a clear and loud message."

Olivia wasn't the only woman to be snubbed from the nomination list. Gina Prince-Bythewood had been hotly anticipated to receive a nod for The Woman King and Sarah Polley for her film Women Talking.

In the history of the Golden Globes, just nine women have been nominated for best director. Only 3 women have triumphed in the category, two of which were in the last two years.

"This is the total number in the 80 years of the awards," Mayah continued.

"It's not like we don't have fantastic directors who are very much deserving of the recognition. Not just because they are women but because they are talented.

"This isn’t the first time the appalling omission of women directors has been raised.

"But it seems as if women won the category for the last 2 years, the judges are scared of another woman winning this year. So in order to avoid a chance of a woman winning the award, they haven’t nominated any."

The Mirror has contacted the Golden Globes for comment.
