The UK mansions of Russian oligarchs could be seized by the Government and the proceeds used to help Ukrainian refugees. It is believed that officials are working on a law that would make it legal to seize and then use or sell such properties or land.
Currently there are nine oligarchs facing UK asset freezes and travel bans, but there is no legal power to confiscate their property without compensation, sources told the Mirror. It's believed that Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Levelling-Up, has ordered plans to be drawn up to change legislation.
A new law could even be brought to the House of Commons next week, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson said to be "mad keen" on the idea, although it could take several weeks longer. Any change would most likely need an Act of Parliament and oligarchs would be able to launch legal battles.
