Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's daughter Karna makes history with Man Utd debut

History was made at Manchester United on Sunday as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 's daughter made her debut for the club's women team.

Karna Solskjaer's substitute appearance against Bridgewater United in the Women's FA Cup made the pair the first father and daughter to play for the Red Devils.

United ran out 2-0 winners in the fourth-round tie at Fairfax Park, as two months after being sacked as manager of the men's team, Ole Gunnar and his wife, Silje, watched on from the stands in support of their 19-year-old daughter.

Karna, a forward with an eye for goal just like her father, was brought on with three minutes of normal time remaining, and the Norwegian received a rousing reception from the travelling supporters.

She was rewarded with her first senior appearance after impressing for the Red Devils' under-21 side and chants of "you are my Solskjaer" could be heard from the packed stands when Karna entered the fray.

Boss Marc Skinner affirmed that her involvement was not a 'token gesture' after she scored in the 5-0 WSL Academy Cup defeat of Aston Villa on Wednesday, taking her tally this season to 13 goals in 12 games, with Ole Gunnar again in attendance.

"It was deserved from the performance that I saw the other day, so congratulations to her," Skinner said post-match. "Obviously she's got a famous dad but she wants to be famous in her own right.

"What I'm trying to do is show them the level they have to jump to to be in and around this team, and it's a big jump but hopefully they can make it, with the wonderful support of Charlotte [Healy, academy manager] and her team as well.

"We were privileged to have Ole as our manager, as well as a wonderful player for this club, but again, it stops becoming about Ole as much and more about Karna."

"It's so important that we raise that fact. But it's maybe, if we talk about the beauty and the romanticism of the FA Cup, maybe that's another story of the romanticism of the Solskjaer's and how important they are to this club."

Solskjaer certainly stole the spotlight in front of a sell-out crowd, as it was a horrible start for the third-tier hosts, conceding in the 17th minute through Charlotte Buxton's own goal, with Red Devils midfielder Hayley Ladd putting her under pressure.

Attention turned to the bigger picture in the 51st minute, though, as "no ifs, no buts, we want an equal FA Cup" echoed around the grounds on Sunday's ties.

With the time chosen to represent the 51-year ban on women's football, the planned protests went ahead despite the FA 's announcement on Friday that there would be a "significant increase" in prize money for the women's competition.

Bridgewater held firm until the 82nd minute before conceding a second, largely down to home goalkeeper Beth Howard's stern performance between the posts.

But Howard was eventually breached again when winger Ella Toone extended United's lead by arrowing a low shot in off the right-hand post.

Skinner's side continue their cup action on Wednesday, facing Chelsea in the semi-final of the FA WSL Cup.

As far as the FA Cup goes, Solskjaer and co are set to learn who they will face in Monday's fifth-round draw.
