Old Kilpatrick cottage owner hopes to transform building into new family home

The owner of a rundown cottage in Old Kilpatrick has purchased the surrounding land in a bid to transform the building into a family home.

Members of the infrastructure, regeneration and economic development (IRED) committee have sold the land near Ferrydykes Cottage to Mr Malik, who acquired the property from Scottish Canals and Waterways in 2006, for £20,000.

A report presented to the committee yesterday described the cottage as being in a “poor state of repair” with only the external walls remaining in place.

The building, which is currently on the buildings at risk register, has no roof with extensive work required to put it back into a habitable condition.

During the meeting it was confirmed that the land would be used solely as a garden area associated with the cottage with nothing further developed there.

But councillors still had some questions.

Councillor Chris Pollok said: “I would just like to confirm that the public right of way will not be disrupted by the development of the garden area?”

A council officer confirmed that the access would be purely from the area of ground which Mr Mallik purchased in 2006 from Scottish Canals.

Councillor Michelle McGinty added: “This is probably something we can’t enforce or anything but I would just highlight that he has had this property since 2006 and obviously it has got into such a state of disrepair that it requires extensive renovation at this point.

“I just hope that we are selling the additional land to allow him to make it into a family home that’s actually going to happen.”

Michelle Lynn, assets coordinator, said: “I believe when Mr Mallik purchased it it was in disrepair and that’s what his intentions are - to bring it back into operation as a family residence.

“We have stipulated that this can only be used as garden ground - nothing can be built on that.”
