OHL Roundup: Cavallin makes 38 saves, Firebirds rout Otters for fifth win in a row

ERIE, Pa. — Luke Cavallin made 38 saves to help the Flint Firebirds to their fifth win straight, routing the Erie Otters 5-1 Saturday in the Ontario Hockey League.

Five different skaters scored for Flint (27-14-2). Riley Piercey's 20th goal of the season midway through the first period wound up being the game winner.

Simon Slavicek, Ethan Keppen and Zack Terry also scored as Flint took a 4-1 lead entering the second intermission.

Dmitry Kuzmin scored an empty-net goal for the Firebirds with under a minute to play in the game.

Cameron Morton scored for Erie (17-20-3).

Otters starting goalie Nolan Lalonde was pulled after two periods of play that saw him stop just 10 of 14 shots. Marshall Nicholls started the third period in relief.

FRONTENACS 9 STEELHEADS 6

KINGSTON, Ont. -- Lucas Edmonds assisted on four goals as part of a six-point night as Kingston (25-12-3) beat OHL-leading Mississauga (28-12-5) in a high-scoring affair. After scoring four goals in the first two periods combined, the Frontenacs exploded in the final third, potting five, including an empty-netter from Edmonds late in the game.

SAGINAW, Mich. -- A five-goal first period scoring eruption carried the Storm (21-15-4) past the Spirit (16-26-1). Centre Cooper Walker had two assists for Guelph and finished the game a plus-five. Dean Loukus had a goal and an assist for Saginaw in defeat.

SPITFIRES 5 KNIGHTS 2

WINDSOR, Ont. -- Wyatt Johnston scored two goals and added an assist to pull into a tie for the league scoring lead with his 74th, 75th and 76th points on the season in the Spitfires' (23-13-4) victory over the Knights (25-12-1). Liam Gilmartin scored both of London's goals, in the first and second periods.

GREYHOUNDS 5 STING 3

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. -- Keegan McMullen scored the game-winning goal late in the seconds period as the Greyhounds (25-14-5) out-fired the Sting (16-18-4) to win Saturday. Sault Ste. Marie out-shot Sarnia 38-26 and overwhelmed Sting goalie Benjamin Gaudreau, who made 33 saves in the loss.

WOLVES 7 COLTS 4

BARRIE, Ont. -- Nick DeGrazia scored his third short-handed goal of the season as the Wolves (14-24-5) eased past the Colts (20-15-4), who are now winless in their last seven contests. DeGrazia also opened scoring for Sudbury and now has 13 goals on this season.

RANGERS 4 ATTACK 3 (OT)

OWEN SOUND, Ont. -- Pavel Cajan made 65 saves and Joseph Serpa scored just over a minute into overtime to help the Rangers (18-19-3) edge past the Attack (19-19-4). Cajan was bombarded by 51 shots by the end of the first two periods, giving up just two goals across the two frames. He only made one save in overtime before Serpa finished the game and gave him the win.
