The Ohio State Buckeyes recruiting trail continues to heat up after flipping former Texas Tech commit Calvin Simpson-Hunt. On Friday they also added Jermaine Mathews Jr of Cincinnati pledged to play for Ohio State.
Currently, the Buckeyes have the No. 1 in the country with a total of 16 commits, two of which are five stars. Ohio State is edging out the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Texas Longhorns, Clemson Tigers, and the Penn State Nittany Lions for the top class in 2023.
Mathews is listed as an athlete but will likely play on the defensive side of the ball at cornerback. He was primarily recruited by secondary coach Tim Walton, who once played the position of cornerback for Ohio State.
Quick cover corner with the skills and tools to play man to man or in zone. Has good change of direction and recovery/closing speed. Shows he can play the ball in the air. Has to add weight and strength still. Was not a varsity starter until his junior year so still has learning to do, but has improved rapidly and has the movement skills to be a high-end college corner and have a chance to play on Sundays. Fits as a player who could play both in the slot and outside. – Allen Trieu, 247Sports National Recruiting Analyst
Mathews has drawn comparisons to Los Angeles Rams cornerback Troy Hill. Head coach Ryan Day and the staff continue to stack together a great class with plenty of work left to be done.
